Dear Reader,
The topic of this website is Oskar Schindler, who was a Nazi that went out of his way to save the lives of Jews during the Holocaust. I was interested with this topic because I had recently watched the film “Schindler's List” for the first time. I was very intrigued by the fact that a Nazi had a change of heart and decided to save Jews.
Before I began my research, I only knew what the movie “Schindler's List” had said about Oskar Schindler. I knew that he was a Nazi who owned a factory and hired Jews to work there. I didn't know why he decided to help the Jews or how he specifically saved some of them. I wanted to learn about why Oskar Schindler had a change of heart and decided to save Jews instead of persecuting them. I also wanted to know specific stories about how Schindler saved his Jews. I knew that he hired them to work in his factory, but I wanted to know how he did that successfully and also if he did anything else to help them.
I found information on my topic on a couple of different websites. One of the main websites that I used was The Righteous Among the Nations website. The Righteous Among the Nations gave specific details about what Schindler did after the war and when he died. It also said where he was buried and talked about how Schindler earned the right to be considered “righteous among the nations.” I also used sources from the Evansville Public Library's database. One of these sites was the Encyclopedia Judaica. This site had a section about Schindler that gave a brief run-through about everything that he did business wise and to help the Jews. Another website that I found a lot of information on was People of the Holocaust. It talked about how Schindler kept his Jews safe by keeping false records.
I learned a lot about Oskar Schindler and what he did to help Jews. My initial questions that I had were answered. I learned that Schindler used false records in order to keep his Jewish workers safe. He listed old workers as younger and young workers as older so that they would be deemed by the Nazis as acceptable workers. I also learned specifics about the extent that Schindler went to in order to save his Jews. For example, I learned that he traveled to the Gross-Rossen Concentration Camp in order to rescue his Jews when they were sent there instead of to his new factory in Brunnlitz.
My research has changed my understanding of the topic. I realized through my reading really how far Schindler was willing to go in order to save his Jews. He worked tirelessly and risked his life in order to save his Jews. He always made sure that they were safe. I would like for my reader to read this and really understand that Schindler was a courageous man who made a stand for what he believed in during a time that a lot of others would not.
I have included three genres on this website. My first genre was a research paper. In this paper, I explain who Oskar Schindler was and how he used his power and his money to save Jews from his area. My next genre was an obituary for Schindler. Schindler died in November of 1974, and this genre gives a brief detail of what he did during his life and where he was buried. My last genre was a wanted poster. The poster was made to look like it had been made by Schindler's Jews after the war ended. The purpose of the wanted poster was to make it look like the Jews were looking for Schindler so that they could thank him for saving them. Please take the time to explore my website and learn more about Oskar Schindler, who was a true hero.
Sincerely,
Isaac Bolin
