Oskar Schindler was born in 1908 and died in October of 1974 in Hildeshiem, Germany. Schindler was married to his wife Emilie, although they were separated towards the end of his life. Oskar Schindler was a member of the Nazi Party under Hitler's reign, although he used his powers to save the lives of innocent Jews. Schindler owned a an enamelware factory in Bruennlitz named Emalia. His factory was used to make pots and pans for the war effort. Schindler hired Jews to work in his factory, even going to the extent of stopping trucks headed to concentration camps in order to save Jews and hire them. Schindler ultimately saved the lives of 1,098 Jews. He spent his last years with some of the Jews whose lives that he saved. Schindler was buried in the Catholic Cemetery of Jerusalem with a gravestone that reads “the unforgettable rescuer of 1,200 Jews.”
